Performed Georgia's First Kidney/Pancreas Transplant

Emory's first kidney-pancreas transplant was performed in 1989. Today, the pancreas transplant program includes simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplant and pancreas transplant after kidney transplant.

Pancreas Transplant to Treat Type 1 & 2 Diabetes

Pancreas transplants were first used for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes in humans in 1966. Emory's first kidney-pancreas transplant was performed in 1989. The Emory Transplant Center has expanded our candidate eligibility for simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation to include selected patients with insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes. Transplant literature has shown that pancreas transplantation is able to sustain normal blood glucose for several years in patients with insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes.

Today, the pancreas transplant program includes simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplant, pancreas transplant after kidney transplant and pancreas transplant alone for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes.
