The Neuropsychology Program at Emory Healthcare provides essential testing to improve care for patients with neurologic or neuropsychiatric conditions. Our team partners with neurologists and other physicians to measure cognitive functions for geriatric, pediatric and rehabilitation patients. These tests help your doctor make a diagnosis and find the best treatment for you. Our team also leads extensive research studies and helps train future doctors.

Finding Answers to Changes in Brain Function
Careful Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
A neurologic condition or injury — from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, to a stroke or traumatic brain injury — can impair how your brain works. You or a loved one may notice changes in attention, concentration, memory or problem-solving.
It’s important for your doctor to understand the extent of the changes in your brain. Our neuropsychologists use interactive tests and brain imaging to study how your brain works. These tools include:
- Fine motor activities
- Paper and pencil tests
- Puzzles
- Determine the risks of treatments such as brain surgery or electrical stimulation
- Map out a care plan for your specific condition
- Measure the degree of cognitive change related to a brain impairment
- Track behavioral or cognitive changes over time
Your doctor may recommend regular neuropsychological testing and imaging to monitor changes in your function. Testing can take place after six months, a year or two years from your initial diagnosis.
Improving Brain Function Through Research
The neuropsychology specialists at Emory Healthcare study how different neurologic conditions affect brain functions such as attention and memory and behavior. Many of our patients take part in these studies. We are grateful for their help in better understanding neurologic diseases and the most effective treatments.
Our team leads projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and public and private foundations that explore:
- Effects of epilepsy surgery on language and semantic memory
- Memory compensation strategies for patients with mild cognitive impairment
We use advanced imaging including MRI to study how neuropsychological abilities are related to brain structure and function.
Our work in clinical trials seeks to improve neuropsychological abilities or minimize neuropsychological side effects from treatment in the areas of:
- Cognitive neurology
- Epilepsy
- Movement disorders
- Stroke
