Neuromuscular
Program

Comprehensive Care for Diverse Conditions

The Neuromuscular Program at Emory Healthcare helps patients diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect the peripheral nerves, muscles and the connection between the two. Our labs provide precise nerve and muscle studies to help make the right diagnosis.

You get the most advanced neuromuscular care. Our clinics are recognized and supported by the national ALS Association, the ALS Association of Georgia and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Conditions We Treat

Our neuromuscular specialists manage a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease) and other motor neuro disorders
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Peripheral nerve disease
  • Muscular dystrophies
  • Myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular junction disorders

Expert Labs for a Confident Diagnosis

Our Neuromuscular Program includes two comprehensive labs that provide vital diagnostic information. They include:

Electrodiagnostic Laboratory at the Emory Clinic - Our team performs more than 1,500 nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) tests each year, as well as perform neuromuscular ultrasound for patients as needed. EMG shows how well the nerves and muscles communicate.

Neuromuscular Pathology Laboratory - Our technicians prepare and interpret nerve and muscle biopsy tissues to diagnose neuromuscular conditions. As a regional referral lab, we serve Emory Healthcare patients and patients from across Atlanta and the Southeast.

Extensive Research For Better Care

Our neuromuscular doctors and scientists lead and take part in basic and clinical research. We focus on disorders of the motor neurons, muscles and nerves. Our work means you get access to clinical trials for ALS and related motor neuron diseases.

Specific areas of study include:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Experimental ALS treatments
  • Genetics of ALS
  • HIV-related neuropathies and myopathies
  • Motor neuron degeneration
  • Pathogenesis and treatments for ALS and peripheral nerve conditions
