Quality

Emory Heart & Vascular Center’s cardiac surgery team achieved top performance compared with benchmarks in two key overall metrics in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD).

The STS ACSD is considered the gold-standard source of data for quality cardiac surgery programs, and it is a central registry in value-based programs and national hospital rankings. Three stars denote the highest category of quality among cardiac surgery programs.

Three-Star Rating for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

For the most recent measurement period (Jan 2019 – Dec 2019), Emory achieved an overall three-star rating for isolated CABG which was observed in only 7.66% of cardiac surgery programs in the STS ACSD. Even more remarkable, our Emory program has maintained its three-star performance in CABG the past 3 years.

Three-Star Rating for Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement (MVRR)

For the most recent measurement period (Jan 2019 – Dec 2019), Emory achieved an overall three-star rating for isolated MVRR operations which was observed in only 6.3% of cardiac surgery programs in the STS ACSD.

Only 2% of STS participant programs achieved a three-star rating in both isolated CABG and isolated MVRR operations.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialties at Emory Healthcare

Emory’s cardiothoracic surgeons offer forward-thinking care that isn’t available at many hospitals. Our physicians specialize in different aspects of cardiothoracic surgery. They use their expertise to help patients with many different conditions.

Aortic Center

The aorta is the most important artery in your body as it carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all the vital organs. So, when you have an aortic condition, you truly need expert care. The Emory Aortic Center offers comprehensive care for the full range of aortic diseases and conditions.

Cardiac Surgery

Emory’s cardiac surgery services are among the most successful in the country. Our cardiothoracic surgeons have performed more off-pump coronary artery bypass procedures than any other hospital in the country. This experience helps you have better health after surgery.

Heart Transplant

Emory ‘s Heart Transplant Program ranks among the nation's top heart transplant hospitals. We’ve performed over 1,000 heart transplants, more than any other provider in Georgia. We’re leaders in heart transplant surgery, and other treatments to improve heart failure.

Robotic Surgery

Emory is one of the few national centers performing robotic cardiac surgery using the daVinci Surgical System. Our surgeons have completed numerous robotic-assisted surgeries and are recognized in Atlanta, the Southeast and across the country for their expertise in cardiac surgery.

Structural Heart and Valve

Interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons work together to provide the latest heart treatments in our Structural Heart and Valve Program within Emory's Heart & Vascular Center. We help patients with structural heart diseases (affecting the shape and size of the heart), including valve disorders and structural heart defects.

Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery involves any organs in your chest, particularly the lungs and esophagus. There are new treatments available for conditions that affect your chest — and the Emory Thoracic Surgery Center helped create and refine many of them. We offer many minimally invasive surgeries to help you heal faster and feel less pain.
